Salary Level: This is a full-time, exempt position offering a salary of $45,000 to $55,000 per year, depending on experience, and a comprehensive benefits package (see below).

Location: Portland, Oregon with an office in the Pearl District, though we are currently working remotely due to COVID-19.

SVP Portland is at an exciting point in our trajectory. Portland’s community is experiencing significant momentum in expanding early childhood learning opportunities. Through Multnomah County’s Preschool for All program, and other new public funding streams, many more families will soon be able to access affordable, high-quality programs for their young children. SVP’s nonprofit partners will play a critical role in the expansion of our community’s early learning system.


As our new Communications and Events Coordinator, you will have the opportunity to learn about and share stories of impact and growth through newsletters, social media, events, and grant proposals & reports. You will be responsible for communications with Partners (individuals who collectively invest their skills and money to fuel our mission), nonprofit partners, and the general public about our internal goals and external work to keep our audience informed and excited about our impact.


You will be an integral member of our six-member staff team that has a deep investment in our mission to support nonprofits who share in our early education goal. You will be assuming duties currently held by these team members, who will onboard and help integrate you into our highly interconnected team. You will collaborate not only with each team member, but also with around 50 Partners. You will also join our internal Equity Team, which works in partnership with the Center for Equity & Inclusion to advance racial equity within our organization.

Key Responsibilities


Marketing & Communications (50%):

  • Write and post stories about SVP Portland’s community partnerships in meaningful, inspiring, and accessible ways; adapt content for website, newsletter, social media, and grant proposals and reports 
  • Implement marketing, public relations, and communications plans to grow resources for SVP; manage metric data for marketing and communications
  • Collaboratively create, then directly implement a communications plan that includes engaging with volunteers

Project Coordination (30%):

  • Act as the through-line for intersecting projects performed by approximately 50 volunteers working with our nonprofit partners as well as on internal committees. 
  • Track and record volunteer engagement and community impact data
  • Use Salesforce to create/maintain contact records and opportunities, produce and refine reports, etc.
  • Monitor grant proposal and reporting deadlines and foundation prospects on annual grants calendar
  • Contribute to continuous development of the organization’s operations wiki 

Event Planning (20%):

  • Coordinate SVP virtual and in-person events, including planning, outreach, and evaluation
  • Manage the online event calendar and registration process
  • Attend events, often held in the evening, for setup and takedown support, and logistics


Preferred Skills and Experience


Any demonstrated combination of experience and education that ensures the ability of an individual to perform the duties and responsibilities of this position may substitute for the stated qualifications.

  • Bachelor degree or equivalent work experience
  • A minimum of two years of experience relevant to the key responsibilities of the position
  • Demonstrated technical, persuasive, and/or creative writing experience; ability to utilize, adapt & synthesize existing content, conduct needed research, and/or perform interviews to create a compelling narrative
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with a proven record of timely results; able to plan, organize, and complete multiple, overlapping projects
  • Ability to cultivate and strengthen relationships and work effectively with a wide variety of constituencies, including staff, nonprofit partners, and current and potential donors
  • Proficiency in an evolving technology environment that includes cloud-based collaboration
  • Document, email and, calendar systems sharing and editing, (e.g. G Suite, Office 365)
  • Familiarity with project management software (e.g. Asana), customer relationship management software (e.g. Salesforce), and marketing platforms (e.g. WordPress, MailChimp, Hootsuite, etc.)


Organization Overview


Social Venture Partners Portland (SVP Portland) is a venture philanthropy partnership that brings professionals and organizations together to address community challenges. Our current goal is to ensure that all children—regardless of ethnicity, wealth, religion, gender, or zip code—have access to high-quality, culturally-relevant early learning experiences.

The SVP community includes engaged donors (who we call Partners) who invest their money, talent, and connections to support nonprofit organizations, collaborative initiatives, and policy advocacy efforts. We develop multi-year partnerships with community-based organizations and initiatives, providing a combination of financial grants and pro-bono consultation. We match our Partners to volunteer projects that strengthen the organizational capacity of our community partners, which support them in achieving their goals for growth and improved services for children and families. We currently work with twelve organizations and initiatives, supporting them in projects that include strategic planning, executive coaching, financial management, business planning, and development of operational plans.


Workplace Expectations


We are currently working remotely from our homes due to COVID-19, and this position will do the same, at least initially (until COVID restrictions change). When we return to in-person work, our office is located within the CENTRL Office coworking space in the Pearl District. It is near public transportation with various modes available for local travel to attend work related events. Compensation & Benefits


This is a full-time, exempt position offering a comprehensive benefits package (see below). Salary is $45,000 to $55,000 per year, depending on experience.

  • Medical/vision insurance with alternative care benefits; SVP pays 100% of the employee premium
  • IRA plan with an employer match, currently at 3%
  • Flexible Spending Account for pre-tax savings on transportation, child care, and/or out-of-pocket medical expenses. Currently SVP contributes $500/year to the medical expenses account
  • Open Paid Time Off (OPTO) is a policy where each employee is afforded the flexibility to take paid leave (i.e. sick, personal, and vacation) as needed. You will plan your time off with your supervisor and team. As always, planning time off as far in advance as possible helps your team prepare for and enable your absence.
  • Travel expenses are covered by SVP for internal meetings and business-related out-of-area travel and negotiated within reason according to policy and client standards.
  • Training and connecting with other SVP international network staff is available electronically throughout the year and occasionally in out-of-town locations.
